Cardiff Switching Centre in the 1970s. This was situated in the old Cardiff Broadway TV studios building which were in an old church a couple of miles from Cardiff BH. The operation was different to that of London Switching Centre in some respects, but probably no less demanding. As well as the routing of incoming and outgoing vision circuits, and equalising and testing incoming OB circuits, some of the other duties were: Controlling the allocation of opt-out switching; Dealing with any problems associated with local routing within the building. "Marrying" sound, control, and talkback circuits with vision circuits for incoming and outgoing contributions and OBs; Liasing with the sound Control Room in Cardiff BH for the allocation of inter-site sound and vision circuits (one of the TV studios was in Cardiff BH); Opting out of network and originating test card with music transmissions when certain daytime and late night network programs from London were not scheduled to be broadcast in Wales; and 'genlocking' station SPGs to network. Cardiff comms staff at that time rotated through shifts in Switching Centre, the Control Room, OB Radio Links, and general base maintenance and minor project work, spending several weeks on each. The Broadway studios closed in the late 1970s when all the TV operations were moved to Cardiff BH. After that, the Switching Centre and Control Room operations were combined in the Comms Centre.
